A LinkedIn prospecting workflow that doesn't burn your account

Connection-request spam is dead and so are the accounts that relied on it. Here's a browse-qualify-reach workflow that compounds instead of getting throttled.

Every few months a new wave of automation tools promises to turn LinkedIn into a vending machine: load a list, blast connection requests, wait for meetings. And every few months a new wave of accounts gets restricted, because LinkedIn is very good at noticing behavior that doesn't look human. The reps who win on LinkedIn long-term run a quieter workflow — one that treats the platform as a research surface and moves the actual outreach somewhere it can't be throttled: email and phone.

The core idea: research on LinkedIn, reach off it

LinkedIn's unmatched asset is context — the title changes, the posts, the mutual connections, the hiring announcements. Its worst channel is the one everyone uses: InMail and connection notes, which arrive alongside forty identical pitches. The workflow that compounds uses the platform for what it's uniquely good at and declines to fight for attention in its most crowded inbox.

  1. 1Browse with intent. Work from a defined ICP, not the feed. Saved searches and 'people also viewed' beat infinite scrolling.
  2. 2Qualify on the profile, not the title. Two minutes of reading — recent posts, role tenure, what they actually own — kills half your list and doubles reply rates on the half that survives.
  3. 3Capture as you go. A browser extension that grabs the person and finds their verified work email while you're already on the profile turns research into a list without a copy-paste step.
  4. 4Reach on email first. Reference something true and recent. The LinkedIn research is what makes the email personal; the email is what makes the outreach deliverable.
  5. 5Use LinkedIn touches as seasoning, not the meal. A profile view before the email and a comment on a recent post after it are worth more than any connection note.

Volume discipline

The uncomfortable math: an account warms up in months and gets restricted in an afternoon. Keep manual-looking activity manual-looking. If your daily numbers would surprise a human recruiter doing the same job, they'll surprise LinkedIn's abuse models too. Twenty genuinely qualified prospects a day, every day, outperforms two hundred on Monday and a restriction on Tuesday.

What to log

Keep a simple record per prospect: where you found them, the one fact you'd open with, and the contact details you verified. That single line of context is the difference between a mail-merge and a message — and it's already written by the time you finish qualifying.
