UTM tracking without the mess: a naming convention that survives the quarter
UTMs are free attribution — until inconsistent naming turns your analytics into soup. A minimal convention and the discipline to keep it.

UTM parameters are the cheapest attribution you will ever get: five query-string fields and suddenly you know which channel, campaign, and placement drove the signup. And yet most analytics accounts are a graveyard of 'Facebook', 'facebook', 'fb', and 'FB_paid' — four names for one channel, each with a quarter of the credit. The tags aren't the hard part. The naming is.
The five parameters, and what they're actually for
- utm_source — where the click physically came from: google, newsletter, linkedin, partner-site. A place, not a strategy.
- utm_medium — the channel type: cpc, email, social, referral. This is the field people misuse most; keep a short fixed vocabulary.
- utm_campaign — the initiative: spring-launch, webinar-june, blackfriday. If finance asked what you spent money on, this is the answer.
- utm_term — optional; the keyword or audience for paid placements.
- utm_content — optional; which variant, when one campaign has several links: hero-cta vs footer-link.
The convention that prevents soup
- 1Lowercase everything, always. Analytics tools are case-sensitive; 'Email' and 'email' are different channels forever.
- 2Hyphens between words, never spaces or underscores-sometimes. Pick one separator and outlaw the rest.
- 3Fixed vocabularies for source and medium, written down where links get built. New values require adding to the list, not improvising.
- 4Name campaigns by initiative, not date alone. 'q3-webinar-series' groups; '2026-07-14-send' fragments.
- 5Never tag internal links. UTMs on your own nav overwrite the real referrer and credit your homepage for your customers.
Build links from a tool, not by hand
Every hand-typed UTM link is a chance to introduce a fourth spelling of 'newsletter'. A link builder with encoding handled and a visible history makes the convention the path of least resistance — which is the only way conventions survive contact with a Friday deadline.
